UNIVERSITY OF GHANA’S DEPARTMENT OF NUTRITION & FOOD SCIENCE TOUR ABL

17th April, 2018

Accra Brewery Limited (ABL), a subsidiary of Anheuser-Busch InBev (AB-InBev), the world’s largest brewer, hosted graduate and post-graduate students of the University of Ghana’s Department of Nutrition & Food Science for a brewery tour of its factory site.

During her welcome speech at ABL’s famous refreshment area dubbed CLUB 31, Ms. Adwoa Aaba Arthur, ABL’s Director of Legal & Corporate Affairs, informed the students that “at ABL, our Dream is to bring people together for a better world. To realise this Dream, we invest in a Growing World where everyone has the opportunity to improve their livelihood”.

ABL achieves our Dream by supporting tertiary education in Ghana with our brewery tours where we share recent industry information and demonstrate the technological evolution which has immensely transformed the brewing process for producing our beverages.

The students, led by their lecturer, Dr. Angela Parry Hanson-Konadu, from the Nutrition and Food Science Department of the University of Ghana began their tour with the Quality Assurance Department. Mr. Wisdom Kofigah, ABL’s Quality Assurance Manager, gave a presentation on how we brew our beer and emphasized on our fermentation processes.

The students observed a demonstration on how yeast is fermented as part of the process for the production of CLUB Premium Lager. Mr. Kofigah explained that yeast is used in the fermentation process to “bring beer to life”.

Packaging Our Beer

During the second stage of the brewery tour, the students observed the packaging process from the gangway of our packaging line. From this vantage point, they experienced how state-of-the-art machines carry bottles to a conveyor belt for washing.

Mr. Benard Adzomadi, ABL’s Quality Specialist and brewery tour guide, explained that after the bottles are washed, they are inspected by the Empty Bottle Inspector (EBI) for flaws such as chips in the neck of the bottle, and scuffs. After the flawed bottles are rejected, the approved ones are conveyed to the filler bowl to be filled with beer.

Next, the bottles go through several quality checks through the fill height inspector and then checked for “under-fills and over-fills”. These filled beer bottles are then conveyed to a crowner and capped. The ready-for-market beverages are loaded into crates for nationwide distribution.

After the brewery tour, the students returned to CLUB 31, where Dr. Hanson-Konadu commended ABL for maintaining a clean and safe factory environment to ensure that the beverages are produced within the highest health standards. She mentioned that “the students had recently studied fermentation at the University and were enthusiastic about the brewery tour which ended up being a great learning experience”.

She further added that, “your packaging line is amazing with state-of-the-art equipment which is highly impressive. We look forward to coming back again to learn new things”.

In addition to our Dream of bringing people together for a better world, we also invest in a Cleaner World where our natural resources are shared and preserved for the future; and in a Healthier World where every experience with beer is positive.
